Where Do Stretch Marks & Acne Scars Come From?

Everyone’s skin consists of two layers: the outer layer called the epidermis and the inner layer called the dermis. The dermis is the target when considering the prevention and repair of stretch marks, acne scars and wrinkles.

The dermis is mainly made up of connective tissue, which are formed from the proteins collagen and elastin. Stretch marks occur when there is a lack of collagen and elastin. Specifically, during periods of rapid growth the skin’s stretching proteins, collagen and elastin, are unable to withstand the rapid expansion resulting in the formation of tiny tears. When these small tears heal, scar tissue forms causing rippled, discolored striae, or stretch marks.

Acne scarring is generally caused by more severe cases of acne. Nodules under the skin generally create the worst cases of acne scars, and are more likely to scar than other type of acne. Most acne breakouts leave a red mark or hyper-pigmented area on the skin after healing. This is common, and the redness typically fades away after 6-12 months once the skin has fully healed. If any acne scar traces are present after one year; they can be considered permanent.
